The Military Aviation Cognitive Assessment System (MACTS) is a suite of computerised modules used by the Australian Defence Force (ADF) as part of the pilot and aircrew selection process, administered during the Aviation Screening Program (ASP) at RAAF Base East Sale, Victoria.
The MACTS evaluates a range of cognitive, psychomotor and aptitude abilities deemed essential for pilot candidacy, including spatial awareness, numerical reasoning, motor skills, multitasking and monitoring ability amongst others.
The same or similar tests are also utilised by other services under different names, including the CBAT (Computer-Based Aptitude Tests) administered by the Royal Air Force (RAF), the CFAST (Canadian Forces Aircrew Selection Test) administered by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), and the FAT (Flying Aptitude Test) administered by the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm and British Army Air Corps (AAC).
The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) also utilises a comparable test battery for aircrew selection. Evaluation is typically undertaken on-site and utilises a desktop computer paired with peripherals such as a joystick.
Please note that this Knowledgebase Article provides information regarding the MACTS as administered by the Australian Defence Force. The composition and structure of the assessment may vary for other air forces and services that utilise the MACTS or a variant thereof, such as the CBAT, CFAST or the FAT.
As of 7th February 2026, the information provided below is being improved and refined to provide greater detail to applicants of this assessment type.
